The mountains surrounding Ushuaia Argentina

When you visit a new port, do you like to spend time sight-seeing in town or do you like to do it in the mountains? Did you know that many first-time cruisers are surprised to find that their options for shore excursions extend far beyond sightseeing tours of the port cities. While excursions that feature bus tours, museums and shopping are delightful, many ports of call offer more active pursuits, too. For example, choosing a shore excursion that includes some hiking is a great way to stretch your legs and see scenic attractions that may not be accessible by tour bus.

Why do I need travel insurance

Air Ambulance in Flight

Air Ambulance in Flight

From time to time, I get asked, “Why do I need travel insurance?” As of this writing, there are two tropical systems in the Atlantic: Hurricane Earl and Tropical Storm Fiona. Earl has already been disrupting cruises in the eastern Caribbean. The affected ships are either re-routing to the western Caribbean or juggling their order of ports. Some are even canceling calls at certain ports all together and adding in extra days at sea.

Alaska best viewed with the naked eye

Do you see the similarities between my hand and a map of Alaska?

The shape of Alaska

The shape of Alaska

After spending nearly two weeks there this summer where our tour guide on the land portion of our trip pointed out that you can sort of make the shape of Alaska with your right hand, I came to realize that Alaska is best viewed with the naked eye. Recently I was reading this post by Evelyn Hannon, aka @Journeywoman on Twitter, and under the last picture on the first page, Evelyn had noticed a woman viewing the magnificence of The Hermitage in St. Petersburg through the lens of her camera. Her comment made me think back to our recent trip through Alaska.  I know first hand how wonderful Alaska is and that you just want to capture all of its beauty with your camera.

Will your final cruise bill give you sticker shock?

Final Bill

Thankfully this final bill is in Pesos

Will your final cruise bill give you sticker shock? On the last night of your cruise, a slip of paper is stick in or under your door tallying up all of your onboard spending. This may really come as a shock if you are a first time cruiser. However, if you think about most of your other vacations, you will do various swipes of your credit card along the way and you only see the bill a few weeks later.
