Why cruise Alaska

without comments

The year was 2004 and we had just celebrated our 10th anniversary that January. For years, we had had a different travel goal in mind for our 10th anniversary, but the birth of our daughter the year before had given us a postponement to that goal.

We decided that an Alaska cruise would be the next best thing. We had always been intrigued by the allure of the last frontier. We knew several people who had cruised Alaska and came back raving. For most an Alaska cruise will be a one time experience. The length of time it takes to fly there plus the added expense make Alaska a once-in-a-lifetime destination.

Whales don't read law books

without comments

There is a federal law that states that no vessel may approach closer than 100 yards to a humpback whale. However there is nothing in the law that says you cannot position your vessel over a 100 yards away and cut the engine. That’s just what happened when we went out with Captain Larry of Orca Enterprises when we stopped in Juneau on our first Alaskan Cruise.

We had several recommendations for Captain Larry so we booked him site unseen several months in advance. The office was just across the street from the pier. Literally we could see the storefront from our veranda. Talk about convenient!
