Remember to lower the camera at times while traveling

Missed Hubbard Glacier Calving
Many of my greatest travel memories have been captured with my digital camera. I can go back and look at those pictures again and again and relive those memories. On the other hand, I have been at times so focused on looking at the LCD screen or through the viewfinder, I have missed living in the moment.
During our first cruise to Alaska, we spent around an hour and a half near Hubbard Glacier. It was our first time to experience a “calving” glacier. Calving is the term for when large chunks of rock and ice fall/break off a glacier and fall into the sea. Because I was trying to photograph this magnificent event, I would miss seeing the actual calving. I would hear it, but I would usually capture the splash into the water. I have tried to describe the sound it makes to others, but you really have to hear that sound for yourself. If you would like to cruise Alaska, right now is a great time to book for this summer.
When you are on vacation, you need to remember to lower the camera at times. You have to live in the moment. I think in the time we are living in we have trouble with that idea. Go to any concert and more than half the audience is holding up the camera phones. Go to a live performance and half the audience is texting, Facebooking or tweeting.
I am guilty of this too. I will post a “Wish you were here” update as soon as I board a ship. I hope to bring my friends, fans, clients and more taking a virtual vacation with me. I will get better at this too. Do you have some place you have been wanting to experience for yourself? Would you let us help you get there? If you do go, will you remember to lower the camera at times?

It’s a difficult thing to balance. You want to actually experience where you are, but you want to record everything so you don’t forget it later. Sometimes it’s better to just take the picture (even if it isn’t perfect) and carry on really living in the moment!
