I bet most of my readers never notice the most important crew members when they take a cruise. Do you think it is the captain, your cabin steward, your waitstaff or your bartender? Maybe you feel it is the cruise director.
Trust me these are all very important staff and crew positions, but I would like to submit to you that the most important crew member positions are the ones you never see or perhaps never take notice. These unsung postions are the crew in the laundry, the maintenance department, the engineering crew and they collect the garbage. I have sailed on Celebrity, Disney, Royal Caribbean, Princess and about to sail on Holland America. Imagine the amount of trash that your own family hauls out to the curb each week and multiply that by a couple thousand families.
I can remember one sailing watching a gentleman with a huge smile on his face walking through the casual dining restaurant one afternoon. He was going from trash can to trash can, removing one bag and replacing another. He did it quietly and unobtrusively. Most people would have never noticed him. I had just finished my meal and as I left I thanked him for what he does every day and his smile just got bigger. You may never notice the most important crew members on your next cruise, but I promise you would if they were not doing their job!
