We share our passion for the cruise experience

Why cruise Alaska

without comments

The year was 2004 and we had just celebrated our 10th anniversary that January. For years, we had had a different travel goal in mind for our 10th anniversary, but the birth of our daughter the year before had given us a postponement to that goal.

We decided that an Alaska cruise would be the next best thing. We had always been intrigued by the allure of the last frontier. We knew several people who had cruised Alaska and came back raving. For most an Alaska cruise will be a one time experience. The length of time it takes to fly there plus the added expense make Alaska a once-in-a-lifetime destination.

An Alaska cruise like any other allows you to experience just a taste of a destination. You do spend a limited amount of time in port as you only have at best a week on the ship and quite frankly there is so much to see! Our 2004 inside passage cruise was just seven days. We departed Vancouver and sailed to the ports of Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka. We also spent a few hours in the shadow of Hubbard Glacier.

In Ketchikan, we flew on a floatplane with Michele with Island Wings into the Misty Fjords. It Juneau, we went out whale watching with Captain Larry with Orca Enterprises. In Sitka, we toured the town on our own and ventured to the Alaska Raptor Center.

Though we had a week of adventures with our then 15 month old, we barely scratched the surface of this great state. When describing our Alaska cruise, we always tell people to hold out their left hand and make a fist sticking out their thumb. We tell people that our inside passage cruise only made it to just past the first knuckle on our thumb. To really get a sense of Alaska, you need to head into the middle of the state (or your fist)!

So that is what we are going to do this summer. We are flying into Fairbanks and over five days we will travel by motorcoach and train down to Seward. We will visit Denali National Park, Talkeetna and Anchorage. From Seward, we board Celebrity Millenium and sail for seven nights to Vancouver, BC, Canada. More details about this trip can be found on our website.

An Alaska cruise is truly something that touches your heart and as many have shared with us, a check off on their “bucket list.” When your wanderlust is in full swing and your are asking why cruise Alaska, we hope we have answered some of your questions!
