We share our passion for the cruise experience

The adage is true…take half the clothes and twice the cash!

It’s a common question I get from time to time. Just what do I pack for a cruise? I thought I would share some random thoughts about this important topic.

Shakespeare once wrote that ‘Brevity is the Soul of Wit!’ Well less clothes on a cruise makes for a happier vacation. Clothes storage space in your stateroom is likely to be limited. In addition, it’s no fun to lug lots of baggage to the pier. Fortunately, while there has always been a certain elegance about cruising, it’s become a more casual type of vacation, even on luxury ships. That means you can probably get by with fewer clothes, and no one will raise an eyebrow if you wear the same thing twice.

During the day, shorts (of reasonable length), Capri pants, jeans or khaki pants paired with t-shirts or sport shirts are fine. For women, simple skirts and tops or dresses are always acceptable. Pack a sweater or two for when the breeze turns cool.

You can generally wear this type of clothing on shore excursions, too. However, some shore excursions call for different choices. If you plan to walk far or on rocky ground, pack some sturdy shoes. If you’re taking an active excursion, like climbing or snorkeling, make sure appropriate clothing is in your bag. If you’re visiting a religious site or a conservative culture, ask your personal cruise expert if there are dress code requirements.

Note that bathing suits are usually considered appropriate only around the pool. Toss a cute cover-up (or a t-shirt for the guys) in your bag – wear it over your suit and you will be welcome anywhere on deck.

For evening, women should bring the type of dress or pants set they would wear to a special dinner out at home. If your ship offers formal nights, bring a dress you would wear to a cocktail party or a wedding reception (you can bring a ball gown if you like). Men should bring a sport coat and slacks to match, plus a suit (and if your companion is bringing a ball gown, you’d better bring your tuxedo). Don’t forget a button-down shirt and tie. And, of course, shoes to match your finery! Tuxedo rental can often be arranged directly from the cruise ship, but you should check into this prior to the cruise.
