Every trip includes pictures etched across the mind. Memories that may or may not fade after time. This one remains pretty strongly chiseled, and I hope it will stay with me until the end.

We were sailing on Royal Caribbean’s newest ship Freedom of the Seas. It was a western Caribbean itinerary which was to include stops in Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Montego Bay, Jamaica as well as Royal Caribbean’s private island stop of Labadee, Haiti.

The weather cut short our port time in Cozumel and canceled our stop at Grand Cayman. We enjoyed the warm beaches of Labadee and my daughter loved playing at the water park as a fun loving three and a half year old.

For our stop in Jamaica, we hired a private driver and took a tour of the island. One of our stops took us to Anchovy where we drove higher and higher into the hills and mountains of Jamaica. We finally turned onto this one lane broken down dilapidated road and drove higher still. We passed a few houses on our journey upwards. My wife and I looked at each other having read stories of crime in Jamaica. What had we brought our daughter into?

We stopped at this small house with a hand painted sign that read “Rockland’s Bird Sanctuary.” It was here that the original owner had spent six years patiently waiting and teaching the hummingbird to drink from small bottles she held in her hand. It was not easy to get to, but honestly what in life is? I cherish that memory.

Dunn’s River Falls and Ziplining can be done time and time again, but for a true adventure. Take time to discover Rockland’s. You will be glad you did.
