The things that pass for knowledge

without comments

In an era where research is just a Google away, you would think the likelihood of an internet saavy fellow getting taken would be slim. Yet, I read the sad tales of other parents being taken by an “unbelievable” opportunity. They were sold on a MLM scheme by the promise of travel discounts and the ability to make loads of cash on commissions. Little do they know they will only make money by recruiting others with the same promise they had been given.

I have had my share of “run-ins” with various friends and family members wanting to meeting to talk about one of those “opportunities”. So to say that I have been skeptical after having received an email toting an “opportunity” is just a bit of an understatement. I may only have a high school education and I did not stay at a chain hotel last night, but I can sniff out when I am being taken. However, everything I have found in my countless hours of research tell me that what I am about to undertake is the real deal.

I am fortunate that I have friends who are serving me as advisers and counselors in this endeavour. These are friends who have been successful in a variety of disciplines. As with anything involving money, I am willing to pay for the services I need most; an attorney and an accountant. I think one should be willing to pay for those services. Sure I can get free consultations all day long from my friends, but when it comes down to actually signing on a “line that is dotted”, one should offer up payment for professional advice.

For instance, I had never heard of the FDD. It is a document that discloses the nitty, gritty of a franchise. Today I received a CD-ROM containing a PDF file which is 111 pages long. There are so many unknowns, but I will go through this and be successful.
